Questions to ask before hiring a home-care provider
What to ask about caregivers, scheduling, communication and what happens when plans change.
Choosing a home care provider means trusting someone with a person you love. These questions help you compare providers on what matters most.
About the caregivers
- How do you screen caregivers? Do you check police vulnerable sector records, references and credentials?
- Are caregivers your employees, and are they covered by WSIB and insurance?
- What training do they receive, including dementia care and safety?
- Will we see the same caregivers regularly?
About the care
- How is the care plan created, and how often is it reviewed?
- How will the family know a visit happened and how it went?
- Who do we call if something changes, including evenings and weekends?
- What happens if a caregiver is sick or a match isn’t working?
About cost
- What are your hourly rates, and is there a minimum visit?
- Are there extra charges for holidays, nights or weekends?
- Will you confirm our rate in writing before care starts?
- Can you help with insurance or benefits paperwork?
A good provider will answer these clearly and in writing. If the answers are vague, keep looking.
